ResumoGlobal climate models typically do not correctly simulate cloudness under condition of synoptic subsidence. In the context of tropical and subtropical ocean-atmosphere interaction, boundary-layer clouds constitutes a important contributor to radiative forcing and climate cloud feedbacks. Identifying clouds regimes and their role in climate system can serve a multitude of purpose, such as a understanding of clouds and to improving the representation of clouds in general circulation models. In this study we report on first results of a technique that aims to identify low level clouds regimes based on clustering thermodynamics profiles from National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) operational analysis. In order to describe the thermodynamics structure associated to boundary-layer clouds was used the commonly variables relative humidity and atmosphere stability, widely used in diagnostic cloud cover methods. We uses a iterative clustering algorithm (dynamic cluster) to objectively classify low troposphere thermodynamics profiles variables. The process result on a representative number of centroids that describe average profiles classes. Applying these methodology on one July day was found ~20 classes for both 00 and 12 UTC. The classified fields was comparing with satellite cloud cover data from International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project (ISCCP) and indicate that about six-seven classes present a predominant cloud top pressure frequency under 680 hPa level. The geographic location of this low level classes show that almost occur over the ocean and a progressive shaded class corresponding to clouds transition from stratocumulus over the subtropical eastern oceans to trade cumulus in tropical regions. These low level classes present a prominent maximum inversion strength (<-0.1 K/hPa) that topped a layer with relative humidity greater than 75%. Beneath these layers the relative humidity profiles present a little decrease, indicating a mixed layer, and above these a substantial drought reach a maximum of 40%. The preliminary results indicate a coherence on clustering thermodynamics profiles and boundary-layer cloud regimes, suggesting their application to provide a improvement on models cloud parameterization.
